Furniture and home decor

  • Jan. 8th, 2008 at 9:57 PM

So we have decided to get all new furniture for the great room in the new house.  We wanted to do this because the look of this house is so different from our last house AND because we want it to be more kid-friendly than our old great room (even though it will not be Grady's primary area to hang out).  So we went to Bassett on Sunday and looked at sectionals.  I think we want to get a leather one, and this is our favorite right now:

The designer came to our house on Monday and measured, took pictures, and just checked out the house in general.  Then she will put together a design board for us and present it to us on Saturday.  So it should be fun.  We also want to do a large ottoman, rather than a coffee table.  I hope to find one with storage inside.  Then we want a club chair or recliner (the type with no handle on the side) for the corner by the fireplace.  We are also hoping to find a new media center.  I know the way to go now is minimal.  Most people get a flat-screen and hang it on the wall with a little console beneath.  The problem with that is that the wall it will be on is HUGE.  It is something like 22 feet high and very long too, with no break.  So we need something to take up space visually.  We will be getting a flat screen though and putting the other TV in the playroom/family room.

As for the play room, we will be using the couches and chair from our old great room.  The couches are microfiber which is extremely durable.  They are also covered by warranty if ANYthing happens to them (marker, blood, cuts, etc.).  The chair is actually upholstered in Sunbrella fabric, so if it can withstand the outdoors, it can handle Grady :)

Here is the furniture (in the old house):

But we will get new wood pieces.  For a table, I would like to get this activity table from PBK (in either chocolate or white, not the honey it is show in):

It is super durable and very hard to scratch.  It would have storage, be a play table for G, and be able to be used for drinks, etc. when G is in bed or once he gets bigger.

We would like to get a small media stand for that room that matches the table.  Eric told me to just find that stuff online and order it, so that will be my project over the next few days.

How fun...new furniture! I love that sectional. We've been looking at a new sofa, but have not been too aggressive in choosing one. I like the PBK table too. I can see G getting some good use out of it.

Well I understnad why you haven't gotten too far with furniture shopping - it's tough with a one-year-old! G ran around Bassett like a mad man the other day. But I do love buying new things for my home, and we are need of lots of things (well, not really in need, but "in want", I guess) so I am having fun.

Where do you like to shop for furniture? I don't know why but I have become a huge fan of Bassett - our dining room, formal living room, and nursery furniture are all from there.

I've seen Bassett commercials before and their furniture looks really nice. I really like that sectional you posted and even looked to see if we had a Bassett here locally and unfortunately we don't. Most of our furniture is made by lexington. We bought almost all of our furniture from a place called lovalace interiors and most of our it was just brands they carried in their store. I think some of it is a mix of different brands. We do have a pottery barn couch that I had from way back that we use in the play room, but it has seen it's days. Our main sofa set is from lovelace. It's nice and comfy, but I'm ready for a new look. I love buying things for the home too. You must be having a blast decorating the house!

Love everything Rosa. We just got a new leather sofa and we LOVE it. And we currently want a soft ottoman as well, something with storage. I know overstock.com usually has them for a decent price and they have $3 shipping on everything. I love the PBK table...there stuff is so cute.

Leather seems like a good choice with a little one around, doesn't it? The ottoman is also a good call - safer than a wooden coffee table, I think. I should definitely check out overstock - I always forget about that place.

The PBK table is a definite - I think it will be perfect for the playroom.

Glad to hear that you enjoy your leather sofa - I just think leather seems nice and classic and also comfy.

We didn't sell the other house yet. If we don't sell it by the end of January, we may sell to the company. They gave us a reasonable price. It has been a bad time of year to sell. But there is another open house there this weekend, so we shall see!

That table just seems so perfect, doesn't it? My friend has it in honey, and it seems super durable. I don't know how it is finished but is just seems like it would never scratch. I also love the bins beneath.

I love to decorate, so I am really excited about my new project! I was getting bored since my last house was actually just about finished :p

I may order the table tonight, actually. When are you moving? Are you relocating or just moving to a different house?

Oh, thanks! New appliances are definitely nice, especially if you like to cook. I am so excited about the ones in our new house.

And I agree, decorating is so much fun. I have bought all sorts of magazines, and I'm ready to go!

Yes having a fridge that doesn't leak when the freezer defrosts to where a bowl is on the top shelf to catch the water. LOVELY! The oven randomly turns off so we have to pay attention. Anything is better than that right now! LOL!!!

I tend to rearrange furniture to get that fresh decorating look. I think I have rearranged my living room 5 times since 04. LOL!!!

Love the ideas! I still have not figured out this LJ yet..I swear it is making me feel like an idiot. Have you met any new neighbors? Hopefully there are some kids or there will be soon.

We have met our new neighbors and they are very nice. It is all new homes in this neighborhood, so the house on the other side has not even been bought yet. The house two doors down has been bought but they haven't moved in. I do know they have a daughter just a bit older than G. I'm sure he will love her!

Beautiful choice! Seth wants leather so badly but I told him not as long as we have our claw-happy cat! I think he's secretly counting her days. ;)
